Kastro
The Frankish Castle of Chlemoutsi
is located 4 Km far from Olympia Golden Beachi and it was
built in a height of 235 meters, from the "Achaia prince"
Godefrid B' Villehardouine of Morea, in 1217 A.C. The guards
were watching the Elian plain and the Ionian see from the
towers of the fortress. Up from the fortress one can enjoy
a spectacular view. The sights that are viewable from this
height are the islands Zakinthos (Zante) & Kefallonia,
the estuary of the river Pineios and the illimitable Elian
plain.
The castle consists of two
enclosures. The inner enclosure, which included the residence
of the castellan or the Prince and the outer enclosure which
consisted of the chapel and the residence for the garrison.
The inner enclosure is built on the highest point of the
hill and it has the shape of an irregular hexagon made up
of a continuous row of halls around a vast central courtyard.
In the outer enclosure, extending north and west, remains
of buildings, cisterns and a Turkish mosque exist. In the
buildings of both enclosures remains of numerous fireplaces
exist. The western architectural features are predominant
in the castle, like the depressed or slightly pointed arches
chosen for the openings and the ovoid vaults which cover
the halls of the inner enclosure.
